NOAA APT weather satellite reception

During North East monsoons many cyclones form over Bay of Bengal and move towards Chennai and they often miss Chennai and went on to hit Nellore or Orrisa. In 1990s there weren't other ways to get updated satellite pictures.

Only DD National will come with satellite pictures during its afternoon news which used to come around 2 pm or during their nightly news at 9 pm.  But even then they some times wont show satellite pictures during 2 pm news if they had other news(mostly political) to show. .

I wanted to receive the pictures directly from the satellite and during late 1990s  and found NOAA satellites sending APT and also softwares which were able to decode them. These satellites are on Polar Orbit so they won't be visible to us all the time.

But the problem was to make a circuit which was capable of receiving the signals from the satellite. Plan had to be dropped.

I got interested  again in late 2007, when I read 'VU2IIA -Ham Radio & NOAA Apt Weather Satellite Image Blog-Mumbai,INDIA'. In this he has built a circuit which was designed by F6BQU. It will automatically scan for satellites and when they come it will decode them and then upload the latest photo to his website.

You can find the links to the circuit in his blog at: http://vu2iia.blogspot.com/

Thanks to Mahesh.

Neosid which is needed as per that circuit is not available in India. It is very costly and also outdated. When I started searching about it, I found my Guruji VU2ZAP from Bangalore. He not only helped me how to overcome it but also helped me with the missing components! Without his help I would have never finished this circuit. Many thanks to him. Even after finishing I regulary distrubed him for proper AFC tunning.

This circuit doesn't have autoscan and we need to manually tune when the satellite arrives.

Note the picture will be B/W only. After decoding Wxtoimg puts maps etc.,. and the final picture looks like this with false colour:
